HOWTO: Reset Service Reminder Indicator on 1998-2009 Volvos

Some 1998 and older models require a OBDII service light reset tool.  You can probably have it reset for a marginal cost by a local Volvo dealership or Volvo specialty shop that has one of these tools.

1998 Volvo S80 Models

  • Turn ignition switch to position I
  • Press and hold the odometer reset button
  • Turn ignition switch to position II
  • After Service light flashes, release odometer reset button
  • Turn ignition off
  • Turn ignition back on to confirm reset

 

1999-2000 Volvo S70 / V70 / C70 Models

  • Insert key in to ignition but don't turn it yet
  • Press and Hold the odometer trip counter reset button
  • Turn ignition switch to "run" position (Position II)
  • After Service light flashes, release odometer reset button
  • Turn ignition off
  • Turn ignition back on to confirm reset

 

1999-2000 Volvo S80 Models

  • Insert key and turn ignition switch to position I
  • Press and hold odometer trip counter reset button
  • Turn ignition switch to position II
  • Continue holding odometer trip counter reset button for about 10 seconds
  • After Service light flashes, release odometer reset button
  • Should hear "beep-beep" to confirm command accepted

 

2001 Volvo S80 / V70 / S60 Models (May apply to S40/V40 also) 

  • The service reminder indicator lamp illuminates for 120 seconds when the ignition is first switched on.
  • Insert key and turn Ignition Switch to position I
  • Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
  • Turn the Ignition switch to position II (within 5 seconds)
  • The service reminder indicator starts flashing when the reset button for the trip odometer has been pressed for 10 seconds
  • Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 5 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded.
  • If the trip meter reset button is not released within 5 seconds the indicator is not reset, but the indicator will stop flashing.


2002-2007 All Volvo Models

  •  
  • The service reminder indicator lamp illuminates for 120 seconds when the ignition is first switched on
  • Insert key and turn Ignition Switch to position I
  • Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
  • Turn the Ignition switch to position II (within 2 seconds)
  • Hold the reset button for the trip meter pressed in until the original trip counter value blinks and is redisplayed
    (For all vehicles 2003- a general yellow lamp will light when the reset button must be released.)
  • Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 4 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded
  • If the trip meter is already reset the reset button should be held in for a minimum of 10 seconds and a maximum of 14 seconds.
  • If the reset button for the trip odometer is not released within 4 seconds, the service reminder indicator (SRI) is not reset.

 

2008-2009 Volvos with starter push button on dashboard

  • The trip odometer must have at least 0.1 mile on it or the light will not reset.
  • Get in vehicle and do not push down on the brake pedal
  • Put the key in the slot and push the starter button once
  • Press and hold down the odometer reset button
  • While doing this, push the starter button again and hold for 2 seconds
  • Keep the odometer reset button held in and watch the instrument cluster for the general warning indicator (I) to illuminate. When this happens, release the button.
  • Turn the vehicle off then back on and verify the message is now out.
